According to information leaked by Twitter account Xperia_info, Sony's line of Android tablets will finally see the addition of a new model five months after the current flagship, the Xperia Tablet S, was announced. The new slate is expected to be called the Sony Xperia Tablet Z  and should offer similar performance to the Sony Xperia Z smartphone that was announced at the Consumer Electronics Show last week in Las Vegas.

The Tablet Z will be larger than its predecessor, moving up to the popular 10.1" form factor used by the Galaxy Tab and the Nexus 10 from 9.4". That display will also see a considerable resolution boost, at 1920 x 1200. While this doesn't match the class-leading Nexus 10, it's still a welcome upgrade from 1280 x 800 and will allow the viewing of Full HD content.


The display will be powered by a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor - the same as you'll find in the Xperia Z smartphone. This will be backed by the now standard 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage. The tablet will run off a 6,000 mAh battery - only two thirds the size of the Nexus 10's capacious battery.


Connectivity for the Sony Xperia Tablet Z is standard for the tablet class, with options for NFC, Wi-Fi N, Bluetooth 4.0 and LTE mobile networks. No physical connectivity options were mentioned in the leak, but I'd count on micro HDMI and micro USB at least. Photographic options also look to be up to par, with an 8 megapixel rear shooter and a 2.2 megapixel front-facer.


While the physical design of the tablet is still mostly unknown, with no photographs having been released yet, we do know a few things about the chassis. It will be just 6.9 millimetres thick (down from 8.8 mm on the Tablet S) and will have IP5X certification for dust and water resistance - as is the case for the Sony Xperia Z smartphone.


The Sony Xperia Tablet Z will run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. That indicates that we'll see the tablet fairly soon, as a tablet launching later in the year would be expected to come with the currently available Android 4.2 OS or even Android 5 Key Lime Pie. The tablet has been linked with Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo, but worldwide availability could be announced at the Mobile World Conference in Valencia next month.
